Why Hasn't My Brilliant Young Adult Launched Yet?
10 Common Challenges Parents Face with Practical Solutions

1. “I can't get them to wake up on time.”

Underlying Issue: Circadian dysregulation, dopamine delay, sensory filtering.

Try This: Multi-sensory alarm systems (light, vibration, scent), cold exposure, motivational anchors, hypnosis scripts reinforcing easeful waking.

How We Can Help: Brain training and hypnosis to link beta wave production with specific stimulus.

2. “They’re addicted to video games.”

Underlying Issue: Dopamine dependency, safety in digital space, overwhelm avoidance.

Try This: Redirect game mechanics to real-world goals, set win-based savings incentives, and reframe digital identity with coaching support.

How We Can Help: Channeling their need for mastery and social connection into real-world challenges; time limiting techniques; value-aligned goal setting; hypnosis for addiction.

3. “They hate every job they try.”

Underlying Issue: Social toll, poor neurotype fit, chronic burnout.

Try This: Explore unconventional work paths, sensory-friendly environments, and internal energy audits to find aligned work rhythms.

How We Can Help: Job tailoring, energy audits, finding “nontraditional” success paths, nervous system support.

4. “They say they are anxious or depressed but won't do therapy.”

Underlying Issue: Shame, stigma, past failures with therapy.

Try This: Offer entry points through coaching, hypnosis, or somatic practices. Build small wins that restore hope and agency.

How We Can Help: Shame coaching, EFT tapping for anxiety and sensory help for hypo-sensory profiles which can lead to depression.

5. “They refuse to do basic chores or take initiative.”

Underlying Issue: Executive dysfunction, demand avoidance, unclear role.

Try This: Use body-doubling, visual chore cues, dopamine-matching rewards, and narrative reframing of their adult role.

How We Can Help: External scaffolding, internal motivation anchoring.

6. “They have friends online but none in real life.”

Underlying Issue: Social trauma, safety in virtual identity.

Try This: Validate digital friendships. Gradually increase real-life interaction capacity through low-pressure social exposure.

How We Can Help: Role play safe interactions, introversion tips and tricks, and NLP tools.

7. “They can't manage money or spend it all immediately.”

Underlying Issue: Poor future abstraction, ADHD impulsivity.

Try This: Set up automated success (round-up savings, visual trackers), reframe savings as freedom, and build reward-based habits.

How We Can Help: Freedom and autonomy life skills;  hypnosis.

8. “They live at home but don't want our help or advice.”

Underlying Issue: Shame, boundary confusion, identity formation.

Try This: Shift parent role to guide, not fixer. Offer collaborative planning sessions and set clear house agreements with respect.

How We Can Help: Reframe roles and build transparency while holding autonomy and boundaries.

9. “They have big dreams but never follow through.”

Underlying Issue: Perfectionism, initiation block, fear of failure.

Try This: Focus on micro-goals, imaginal rehearsal, and somatic grounding. Build momentum through safe small wins.

How We Can Help: Hypnotherapy for Vision Casting and follow through, reduce cognitive load with body-first strategies.

10. “They can't cook, clean, or take care of themselves.”

Underlying Issue: Overwhelm, skill anxiety, poor interoception.

Try This: Teach one skill at a time with modeling, gentle accountability, and body-based sensory rewards.

How We Can Help: Increase motivation and energy through somatic and energy based practices.

A Word from Jennifer and John

We see you.  You’ve raised an insightful, bright and unique young adult- and yet the path to independence hasn’t been as smooth and straightforward as you’ve hoped.

You are not alone.

So many parents come to us with deep love and even deeper concern:

Why won’t they wake up without our constant reminders?

Why are they stuck in gaming worlds?

Why does the world feel so hard for them to navigate?

This guide was created to offer compassionate, realistic, and neuro-affirming strategies for the most common blocks we see in our coaching and therapy work.  We hope it offers not just ideas- but a sense of relief, hope and partnership on this journey.

Warmly,

Jennifer and John Ferrante
